Friendships aside, I think they're really good, and apparently I'm not alone, since if they ever record an LP, it'll be released by King of the Monsters, who released the Locust/MITB split back in '95 and haven't done anything in a while. Anyway, this is the rip of their second demo with tracks split up by yours truly. I didn't get a copy of the tape because they sold out very quickly, but then again, neither did Daniel. Oh well.

dl

Meatsmoke - Meatsludge

Meatsmoke is a band I started early this semester to have fun playing loud. The five of us have practiced together a grand total of twice, we have played about six shows, and, true to form, the five of us were never in the same place while we were recording this demo. However, I don't think that kept it from turning out pretty well. I know this is a plug and everything, but yeah, I'd put us in the "sludge metal" and "noise rock" categories. The picture is of 3/5 of Meatsmoke doing an Eyehategod cover set because no pictures of us together exist. The first time we had a show here, my friend Anthony got in touch and asked if his new band, COSMOPOLITAN, could play. He's a great dude so it didn't take much convincing. They started playing and Jesus, they were tight, energetic, loud, and original. They got through about three and a half songs that night before the cops came and shut the show down, but I was totally blown away, and have since seen them perform about ten times, a few instances of which have been in my basement. Anyway, this was recorded on a Zoom field recorder in my basement with an audience of about seven people. It sounds good and it's the full set, and they're totally on as usual. Anthony has said that they're going to change their name soon, but for now they are COSMOPOLITAN.

Anyway, more descriptively, COSMO play "noise rock" which usually falls somewhere between Lightning Bolt and the Melvins, but with a flair for showmanship neither of those two bands possess, as well as a technical bent which would make Buzzo cry. Anthony (bass/vox) and Matt (drums/vox) are always on their own wavelength, so watching them live is a sight to behold. (Sometimes they don't even count into their songs!) Anyway, I feel like they've got a pretty good chance of getting "big," so don't sleep on this:

DOWNLOAD

POLLUTED BITCH-HOUND- LIVE 4/21/10

I don't have a picture for this show yet, but a band I play in, Polluted Bitch-Hound, played a show in a hall at the school I attend last week and we got a pretty good audio recording of it. This was a weird realization to come to because I used to hate metal, so the fact that I'm suddenly seeking it out so actively is weird to me, but I love it.

I stumbled upon this gem of a band a few months ago when the only true "metal dude" I went to high school with sent me a youtube video of Dissection. My impression was that it was a wild-eyed, evil-looking bald dude spewing hatred in every direction, and while I enjoyed it greatly, I didn't give it a second thought until I thought about it again a few weeks ago. These dudes are considered "melodic black metal," and I can totally see where they're coming from. This album came out in 1995, and it's got everything from ambience, acoustic guitar, and reverb (plus a piano tune) to blastbeats, double bass, and the like, plus some of the most vicious chord progressions I've heard in a long time. The production on here is also very good, more akin to the stuff Emperor ended up doing than to Mayhem or something, only minus synths. This isn't a very obscure band by any means, but it's a masterpiece well worth checking out.

buy
dl

CARCASS- SWANSONG

Since the start of my metal binge, three bands have really risen to prominence among what I would consider my all-time favorite bands, period: Sabbath, (vintage) Metallica, and CARCASS. Like what I still consider my favorite band, the Clash, Carcass came a long, long way during their time as a band, and I'm well aware that many who are familiar with their later work (Heartwork or Swansong) can't stand their days as a pioneering goregrind band, and vice versa. That being said, the majority of fans consider Heartwork to be their masterpiece, but while I adore Heartwork, this album is exactly my speed: the riffs are better than ever before, Jeff Walker manages to articulate the lyrics and (surprise!) they don't make me cringe, and the production is utterly sparkling. The solos shred, and Ken Owen's drumming is more inventive than ever before, showcasing an extremely unique and awesome style despite his relative lack of technical prowess compared to, say, Dave Lombardo or Gene Hoglan or something. Anyway, as far as "death 'n' roll" goes, this completely eclipses the previously-posted Wolverine Blues (Entombed), and fans of this should also check out the compilation Wake Up and Smell the Carcass, which features five outtakes from the Swansong sessions as well as some great live cuts.

buy
dl

YOU'RE TOPS IN MY BOOK, KID

I decided to make lists of my favorite albums of 2009 and my favorite albums of 2000-2009. Here they are. (Not going to link to all of them; find 'em yerself)

TOPS OF 2009
1. Pygmy Lush/Turboslut split LP- Everything here rules. Two great bands ensure that this LP is ugly, beautiful, sad, angry, you name it. A very important release to me.
2. Divisions- Fin CS- Briefly sums up the hardcore of the last five years. Absolutely crucial/the best of the "hype" bands.
3. Iron Age- The Sleeping Eye- In a year when I learned to embrace the riff wholeheartedly, this album delivered some absolutely great ones.
4. Teenage Cool Kids-Foreign Lands- More complex and experimental than their demo or Queer Salutations, but everything is still charming and wonderful with this band.
5. The Hunches- Exit Dreams- This one totally took me by surprise. I guess I would call it "raw garage indie," so not normally my bag, but most of the songs here are just flat-out great.
6. Darkest Hour- The Eternal Return- This album does exactly what they wanted to do, it combines the best parts of their previous three full-lengths. The solos are sick as usual, the vocals have a bit more of a roar to them, and a lot of this is just anthemic. A great album.
7. Protestant- Antagonist- This band doesn't need my shitty rave review. Super-heavy, super-dark, super-well-written, all on the perfect format, the 7". Points for packaging too.
8. Villains- Lifecode of Decadence- This album slowly grew on me, but man, it delivers. The songwriting is never mathematical, conventional, or forced, the riffs are just dirty, the whole record seethes with pure hate.
9. Hatred Surge- Deconstruct- Hatred Surge has become one of the most talked-about bands in hardcore, and it's not hard to see why- this album rips.
10. Graf Orlock- Destination Time Today- So what if this band's a gimmick? My favorite Gorlock LP, somehow more accessible than the others despite the fact that this is still just another testament to the power of cinema-grind.
11. The Horrors- Primary Colours- I never would've guessed that I would ever like these guys, but hey, they got good fast. This album takes risks, but everything works.
12. Mala Suerte- The Shadow Tradition- I'm so glad that new bands keep appearing and releasing very high-quality stoner metal. This one goes a little more towards the doom end, but man, some heavy shit.
13. Converge- Axe to Fall- Converge continues its progression. More shred than usual, overall really good.
14. ANS- Pressure Cracks- With Annihilation Time broken up, ANS picks up the flag of pizza punx and runs with it. So, so fun.
15. The Catalyst- Swallow Your Teeth- This band is sick. Some seriously intense and riffy skramz-influenced hardcore (or something). This band can just throw it out and have it rule.
16. Ancient Sky- S/t- Awesome record. Psychedelic rock can go very wrong, but Ancient Sky is perfectly melodic and pretty trippy. Far, far better than Ghastly City Sleep, with whom they share members.
17. Iron Lung/Walls/Pig Heart Transplant- Public Humiliation- A great bro-down in lieu of a new Iron Lung LP this year. Adds new depth to everything they play here.
18. Black Dice- REPO- BD continues to get more beat-driven, but for some reason I'm still really into it.
19. Cult Ritual- S/t- The most-hyped of the hype bands, but not without some justice: CR was a really, really good hardcore band.
20. AA Bondy- When the Devil's Loose- I think I like American Hearts slightly more, but Bondy can seriously get you down.
21. Nazi Dust- ?-I don't even know what Nazi Dust has released in '09, but I do really like this band, myriad releases and all.
22. Vile Gash- I and II-A very good year for hardcore, at least in Florida, yields at least one more solid, short-lived band.
23. Mariachi El Bronx- S/t- A very legit mariachi record. The first song is really, really good, and everything else is nice and fun.
24. Skeletonwitch- Breathing the Fire- Another band with riffs to spare.
25. Candlemass- Death Magic Doom- This band is fairly critically-acclaimed for the doom scene, but they definitely deliver the goods.

TOP SHOWS, 2009
1. Eyehategod, Unearthly Trance, Tombs- Europa, Brooklyn, NY 26 Oct.
2. Iron Lung, Mind Eraser, Brain Handle, Nomos- Cake Shop, Manhattan, NY 10 Nov.
3. Iron Age, Hatred Surge- Living Room, Tucson, AZ 30 July
4. Mark Kozelek- Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY 6 Aug.
5. Comadre, Trainwreck, Saddest Landscape- ABC No Rio, Manhattan, 13 June

TOP RELEASES, 2000-2009
1. Fugazi-The Argument- This record is one of a handful ever to make me shudder with its brilliance. The songwriting here is utter perfection; my favorite album from one of my favorite bands.
2. Electric Wizard-Dopethrone- The Wizard answers the question of who will push stoner metal to its slowest and heaviest once and for all. Pure hate, pure heaviness.
3. Radiohead-Kid A- Everyone does this one, but it's so obvious. This is a legitimately great band recording their defining record. One of the few "electronic" records I can totally get behind.
4. Majority Rule-Interviews With David Frost- This album is so ass-thrashingly good. So many risks are taken, yet nothing feels out-of-place. The only problem is that it's too short!
5. City of Caterpillar-S/t- Intense, emotional, and gripping. Things don't ever really seem drawn-out even when they are. Super-creative.
6. Fucked Up-Hidden World- Another critics' darling, but this beast delivers 70-and-change minutes of awesome innovation. I prefer this over The Chemistry of Common Life, but that one's very cool too.
7. Black Eyes-S/t- I've been debating whether to put this one or Cough first, but I'm going to go with this one because I have fond memories associated with it and because I've listened to it more.
8. Black Eyes-Cough- The second great statement by one of the most creative bands of my lifetime.
9. Pygmy Lush/Turboslut Split (see above)- The best material from both bands. Pure greatness all around, a fantastic LP. Unfortunately, the best Turboslut will ever release (RIP).
10. Pg.99/Majority Rule-Document #12- Pg.99's side finds them at their most awe-inspiring, and that's saying something; Maj Rule's side is not quite as good, but is still absolutely great.
11. Dillinger Four-Versus God- D4 are just one of those bands where you feel like you can do what they do, but you just can't. This is my favorite of their albums, it rules.
12. Annihilation Time-III: Tales of the Ancient Age- This band laid waste to everything in its path. Who cares that this album contains basically one uniform tempo? Riffs, riffs, riffs. I love this album.
13. Skitsystem-Stigmata- Fast, loud, heavy, and angry. This album relentlessly crushes, and this band's back together! Fuck yeah!
14. Black Ships-Omens- The sole LP from a band which will never gain any recognition for anything other than sounding sort of like Cursed. This band was beyond heavy, beyond miserable, beyond loud, and could write a song with the best of 'em.
15. Black Dice- Broken Ear Record- My favorite BD record. The perfect combination of the Beaches and Canyons- and Creature Comforts-style weirdo-sounds with just enough rhythm to move it along.
16. Darkest Hour-Undoing Ruin- I think this record is Darkest Hour right when they reached the perfect blend of metal and hardcore. It's technical but not too technical, and just raw enough. This album really got me into metal.
17. Pygmy Lush-Bitter River- This is such a fantastically good album. I like it more than Mount Hope because the loud songs on here absolutely rule, and the quiet songs are among some of my favorite PL songs. Not as good as the Turboslut split, but very, very close.
18. End of a Year-Sincerely- I'd say this is one of the most "solid" releases I've ever listened to. The lyrics, as always, are a huge strong point, but everything just meshes together so well, it's all just so well-done.
19. The Locust-New Erections- I'm never ashamed to say I like this band because their music really does back up the hype. This was a perfect progression. I like every release even more than the last one, and the darker edge here really suits the band.
20. Eyehategod-Confederacy of Ruined Lives- Not as good as Dopesick, but then again, nothing is. A great album by a great band. Hurry up and release the fucking follow-up already, dudes!
21. Teenage Cool Kids-Queer Salutations- This band is just so charming in its simplicity. Overlapping catchy melodies backing up lyrics I can really get behind.
22. Hot Snakes-Suicide Invoice- Whenever Froberg and Reis get together magic happens. This band was so, so good and I think this is their best. A great album to listen to at any time whatsoever.
23. Darkthrone-Sardonic Wrath- I don't honestly mind their more recent crust outings, but I think that this is the best effort Nocturno and Fenriz put together this decade. The riffs are so evil and so good, and the production here may be my favorite on any Darkthrone release.
24. Iron Age-The Sleeping Eye- To me, this album stands up to a lot of what was put out when anyone could play great thrash. Iron Age can throw out great riffs with the best of 'em. The lyrics are pretty stupid, but who the fuck cares? THRASH!
25. Divisions- Fin CS- Sweet.

POLLUTED BITCH-HOUND-HUNGRY DEMO

So I decided to plug the new band I am in before the year is out. I spent all day yesterday recording and mixing this demo. I came out very well and I am happy with it. My new band is called Polluted Bitch-Hound. We play riffy psychedelic/hard rock stuff, I guess somewhere in the ballpark of Sabbath, Flag, Deep Purple, Blue Cheer, Bl'ast, etc. We have played some shows and done some basement demos, but this was done in a studio with nice mics and such. Anyway, please give it a listen!

download

HAPPY HOLIDAYS//HEAVY 101

I doubt I'll be posting on here again before the New Year, so I thought I'd end the first full year of Girth Crisis, one of few posts, with a special Holiday treat. I believe I've used ELECTRIC WIZARD as a reference point when describing various bands on here, but have failed to post anything by the good Wizard itself. Well, a little background, then I'll make with the links.

I'd heard Electric Wizard was mind-blowing from some pretty respectable sources, but it took me a while to check them out. For whatever reason, the concept of slow, heavy, weed-reeking, disgusting vibes had limited appeal for me, so I kept listening to Pg.99 and really didn't budge on the issue. One day, on a whim during a particularly depressing day or evening in my old dorm room, I read one last time that Dopethrone was a bona fide classic, making every other "heavy" band look like lightweights.

In retrospect, it was a great idea to start there. Dopethrone begins with what probably is the Wizard's most accessible song, "Vinum Sabbathi," a three-minutes-and-change introduction to what instantly became one of my favorite bands. Calling Dopethrone "heavy" is like saying that Rush are "good musicians" or George Carlin was a "funny guy." The record flat-out crushes, every riff sounds like something Master of Reality-era Sabbath wrote, forgot about, handed off to Jus Oborn, and asked for it to be tuned down like five steps, the drummer, Mark Greening, hits the drums harder than anyone I've ever heard, with the possible exception of Bill Ward himself, and Tim Bagshaw's bass just adds to the heaviness. Jus' vocals are distorted, low in the mix, and pure hate, spewing some of the coolest lyrics I've ever heard. Dopethrone is a modern-day classic.

From there I went to Come My Fanatics..., Dopethrone's full-length predecessor, which is a tad less heavy and hateful (but only a tad), but about 99% the classic Dopethrone is. "Return Trip" and "Wizard in Black" are both up there with the Wizard's best songs, and I count them among my favorites. No song on the album proper clocks in at under 6:42, making this record a slightly more challenging listen, which is probably the only thing keeping it from reaching the heights of Dopethrone. The first record, the self-titled, doesn't quite run with those two, but still shows a band reigning far above most any other band daring to play heavy and slow. The two EPs I'm putting up, Supercoven and Chrono.Naut, only add to the madness, and "Supercoven" is a particularly great track.

Alas, all was not all in the Wizard camp. After the somewhat-disappointing follow-up to Dopethrone, Let Us Prey, Bagshaw and Greening left to form the great Ramesses, whose EP was covered in a recent post. Electric Wizard Mk. II soon emerged with 2004's We Live, which was an improvement over its predecessor but failed to reach the heights of vintage Wizard. 2007's Witchcult Today was a much more solid effort, and though I did not include it here, it is thoroughly worth checking out. Anyway, you probably want me to shut up and post the links:

Dopethrone: buy/download
Supercoven: buy/download
Chrono.Naut: download
Come My Fanatics... Hailing from the once-great rock 'n' roll city of Cleveland, these guys put on grim reaper hoods and do their best to reclaim the throne. I came across their myspace because they're tight with some other great bands and was blown away by the whole spectacle. Awesome.

d/l

TURBOSLUT-ORDER OF THE TURBOSLUT

I really can't decide whether I'm more bummed about Turboslut's breakup or Annihilation Time's. I'm actually going to go with Turboslut because I've seen AT and those dudes got to release three sweet full-lengths before calling it quits. Turboslut only did this and the Pygmy Lush split covered earlier (you find it) and I missed the boat on them. Whatever, I can't even describe how blown away I was the first time I heard "Speed" off the Pygmy Lush split and that release is the superior of the two, but Order of the Turboslut offers more Turboslut songs, so what the fuck. Miserable, pissed, dark, and grungy, this band hits a spot for me that nobody else really can come close to. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't an uncomfortable spot, but I will continue to defend my love of this band. Contains my second-favorite Turboslut song, "Running in the Family." Check it out.

d/l

BLUE CHEER-OUTSIDEINSIDE

Apparently this beast was recorded both in and out of doors, hence the title. These dudes were serious hippies. Whatever, this is my favorite Cheer record, which I don't think is a hugely controversial claim to make- they were still a young band, but their jamming is tighter and even trippier than it was on Vincebus Eruptum. This one has my favorite Cheer song, the just-plain-heavy "Just a Little Bit," which boasts an absolutely great riff and one of Dickie's best vocal performances. They also do a great version of "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" and a mix of other great covers and originals in the way that only they could. Dickie just died and you should feel bad. Worship.

buy
d/l

SOURVEIN- S/T; RAMESSES- BAPTISM OF THE WALKING DEAD; ENTOMBED- WOLVERINE BLUES

Sup internet?! I've just been chilling and going to school and shit. Daniel and Mike have been doing the same I guess. I just got internet at my haus and it's pretty fast so I decided to do a post. I was going to upload a rip of the Fin cassette by Divisions, which is some of the most ripping shit ever, so I forgot and instead just uploaded some of the other music I've been digging lately. Some new, some not. Enjoy.

Sourvein- s/t

Sourvein represent a good deal of what I've been listening to these days: slow, sludgy, riff-driven, fucking loud. This band is very bluesy and my closest approximation of their sound is a slightly less abrasive Eyehategod. The vocals are pretty sweet and this is overall a very good release by a very good band. I think they may have broken up, because one of their guitarists married Jus Oborn and now plays in Electric Wizard mk. II. I considered putting Dopethrone up in this post, but if you don't already have that you have little business checking out a Sourvein record.

OUT OF PRINT
d/l

Ramesses- Baptism of the Walking Dead EP

Continuing the trend of bands featuring sometime members of Electric Wizard, Ramesses features 2/3 of the "classic" EW lineup, the one that cut fucking Come My Fanatics..., Supercoven, and Dopethrone and therefore have earned themselves a lifetime of doom cred. I honestly like Ramesses slightly more than the Wizard's Witchcult Today. There's some sonic similarity between the two, but Ramesses does have a distinct black metal influence, most obviously in the vocals. At first I couldn't get into this but holy shit, this crushes. I guess these three songs are going to be rerecorded for their new album, so get stoked.

d/l

Entombed- Wolverine Blues

I find the direction this band took hilarious, even if I do love this shit, in all seriousness. Entombed cut two seriously legit death metal albums (I mean, they did that shit as well as anyone), then I guess decided that they wanted to have verses, choruses, and solos in their songs; thus, death 'n' roll was born. I feel ridiculous when I listen to Wolverine Blues, but I just can't resist.

UPDATE: I'm an idiot and forgot to post the link.
HERE

SCUD MOUNTAIN BOYS

Daniel was in San Diego recently and picked up a cassette by a band called Scud Mountain Boys, for some reason. Anyway, turns out they're great. Joe Pernice, later of the Pernice Brothers, was in this band, which may or may not be of interest to you. Daniel and I have been fucking huge on Pygmy Lush for a while, and I covered Red House Painters in an earlier post so this is a welcome precursor to that: a little more country, a little less folk, and just as depressed, which is awesome. I uploaded two full-lengths, Dance the Night Away and Pine Box, and they're both excellent. I find that Pine Box is of slightly higher quality, but they share a sound and are entirely worth having.

buy them both!
download Dance the Night Away
download Pine Box

STABYOUINTHEHEADANDEATYOURFACEOFF

Herbs Get Wet

This release is the longer and better of the two. I think they released this after they got back together, and the production and songwriting are generally better than on Killin Toys. The drummer definitely took the snare off, so it kind of reminds me of St. Anger- era Metallica, except good and not "thrash metal" or whatever you want to call that one. They kind of remind me of Dangers and that school of hardcore, only with some Boston HC influence. They do the guitar-drums-vocals thing, and their guitar work is pretty impressive considering. I like this band.

MOUTHBREATHER- THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE; PITCHFORK- EUCALYPTUS + SATURN OUTHOUSE; BONGRIPPER- HATE ASHBURY

Mouthbreather- Thank You For Your Patience

Wow, Owls! was, for a moment, one of the best bands out there. I bought their split with The Set-Up around the time that came out, and both sides ruled. I dig it, and so should you.

buy
d/l

Pitchfork- Eucalyptus + Saturn Outhouse

This release compiles the album and EP released by Pitchfork, the first band featuring John Reis and Rick Froberg, who would go on to form the incredible Drive Like Jehu (covered earlier). Reis would also form Rocket from the Crypt, who I don't really like, and then Reis and Froberg would get back together to form Hot Snakes, who I love. Anyway, this sounds like a more melodic, less technical version of Jehu. Froberg's vocals aren't quite as rough, and only Reis played guitar here, so there's none of the awesome interplay that made Jehu stand out so much, but there are some real winners here.

buy
d/l

Bongripper- Hate Ashbury

Something about this album leads me to believe that these guys like weed. This is not the best thing Kozelek's ever put out; that honor goes to either Rollercoaster or Songs for a Blue Guitar. Sun Kil Moon, his current band, has also released some stuff that rivals this. Still, there are some real winners here, including the awesome "Lord Kill the Pain" and the title track. First RHP album I heard was Rollercoaster, and I think that one's easier to get into right away, but this is really good stuff.

buy
d/l

Pygmy Lush- Live CD-R

I don't know how these dudes want me to write their name. Pygmy Lush? Pygmylush? Pg.99 had the same problem. No matter. Five or six guys (who happen to make up the best band in existence right now) going into a studio and laying down some quiet jams, including the then-unreleased "Proud King of the Doomed." Everything here could pass for a Pygmylush studio album, but the real treats are two covers: first, a "cover" of Pg.99's "Lonesome Waltz of Leonard Cohen" which totally rules, then an even better cover of the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" which totally sounds like a Pygmylush song. Any collection without Pygmylush is incomplete.

d/l

Witch Hunt- Blood Red States

Witch Hunt play serious punk rock and you should know 'em if you haven't heard them already. This is impressive, technical, ambitious, emotional, and well-written. Every part fits pretty well pretty much everywhere, and most of the time everything is transcendent. It isn't a perfect album, but this is a new band showing more talent at this early stage than many perfectly acceptable bands ever did. The music itself is expansive, post-rock-influenced screamo sung in French. They sometimes have spoken-word parts that aren't the greatest, but what makes up for that and REALLY fucking impresses me is how they can do the whole post-rock/screamo thing without totally ripping off City of Caterpillar or Envy, though I do hear some serious Amanda Woodward here. (Makes sense.) I am really looking forward to hearing the next thing these dudes do or, even better, seeing them if they ever come to the States.

buy
d/l

The Holy Mountain- Bloodstains Across Your Face in Decline

Sounds like Combatwoundedveteran playing Tragedy-type stuff. Well, fuck that. The contents are half of a phone conversation and a phone message left by a coke-addled girl apparently attending the school I go to. Starting at around 3:30, things get fun. Small download and seriously entertaining, though I don't know how funny it'll be if you don't know the full story. Please give it a listen.

d/l

END OF A YEAR

So End of a Year is a band from Cohoes, NY, a suburb of Albany, which is also close to where I live. I saw this band a few times back in 2005, which I'd define as "early" EOAY, and they've since gone on to release records on Revelation and Deathwish. I haven't seen them since, but they've morphed into one of my favorite bands. Anyway, I found these two really early releases, so I thought I'd share them:

END OF A YEAR- WARM (DEMO)

Early demos are sort of a music form in themselves. They usually represent some dudes just learning how to play together, and they usually contain songs written before the band really knows how to write songs. This demo is much more straightforward than anything the band has done since, so the whole Revolution Summer influence everybody mentions with EOAY is really prominent here. Still, it contains a few really raw, sweet moments, most notably "Hey," a great song which was recorded for Disappear Here but honestly sounds better on here.

d/l

END OF A YEAR- DISAPPEAR HERE

They rerecorded four or five of the best Warm jams for this and added about as many originals. The songwriting definitely had reached a more advanced stage, and the album as a whole has a little ambition to it. The recording is still raw as hell, which I really like, and it's debatable which is better, this or Sincerely, which is a compliment to either LP.

d/l

Sincerely is available for purchase or download in an earlier post.

THE SAWTOOTH GRIN- CUDDLEMONSTER; MARA'AKATE- EP; MAJORITY RULE- 2000 DEMO

THE SAWTOOTH GRIN- CUDDLEMONSTER

I first heard the Sawtooth Grin, a band from my area, more or less, two or three years ago and thought they were the most ridiculous shit ever. Honestly, they're still the most ridiculous shit ever-- you can take that as a positive or a negative. These dudes played very fast, technical grind, and by "grind," I don't mean Slap-A-Ham-type shit, or even Destroyer Destroyer-type shit. The guitar is very clean, almost jazzy, throughout, the drumming is "bonkers," and the vocals come courtesy of the most talented, if grating, screaming dude I have ever heard. I'm not even sure how much I like this anymore, but it will definitely make you think.

d/l
Out of print, to my knowledge.

MARA'AKATE- EP

If I were to really dumb down a comparison here, I'd say this sounds like Daughters' Hell Songs. It's similarly intense, has these very calculated and cool guitar parts, has a singer that does not straight-up scream, and still seems pretty chaotic. Throw that in with some more rocking and screamo-influenced parts and you pretty much have this EP. Sorry if I haven't really sold it, but I like this a lot more than I liked Hell Songs. Also, these files are very low-quality, so you may just have to buy this one! Hah!

buy
d/l

MAJORITY RULE- 2000 DEMO

Before I get on to describing the demo, lemme gush for a sec-- Majority Rule have had a huge impact on the way I listen to music. I try to be as diverse as possible in my listening habits, and these endeavors have really given hardcore a much less prominent place in my mind. In general I associate it with being sixteen and going to awful, awful shows and not really having great friends. Don't get me wrong, there's some fantastic hardcore out there, but nothing fast and heavy blows my fucking mind quite like Maj Rule's Interviews with David Frost. Emergency Numbers, the second full-length, also would get a 10/10 on anyone else's scale, and the split with pg.99 is in the running for my favorite releases ever, both sides. This band had fifteen or so songs that were flat-out perfect, which is more than 98% of bands across the board can say. Majority Rule absolutely ripped.

Okay, this demo contains four songs, three of which made it onto Interviews. The quality is pretty good for a demo, and though some parts are changed between this demo and the full-length, if you've heard Interviews, you've basically gotten the full experience. So why is this worth posting? 1.) You get to spend more hard drive space on Majority Rule, and 2.) You get to hear "No Breathe," which definitely could've matched up to the songs that made the cut. Here, I want you to have it.

d/l

BLACK SHIPS- LOW

BLACK SHIPS- LOW

My huge boner for this band continues. Released before Omens, Low contains four songs that are slightly faster and less perfected, but definitely by the same band that birthed the monster that is Omens. Opener "These Nights in These Places" has one of the best riffs I've heard from them, and I can actually make out the lyrics in spots. Yup, they're a bummer.

buy
d/l

WUT UP PLAYBOIZ?!

WRANGLER BRUTES - ZULU

Sam MacPheeters of Born Against on vocals with a cameo from Keith Morris. The only descriptors I can think of for this band would turn me off in two seconds flat if I were to read them: "mid-tempo", "indie-rock", and -- wait for it! -- "from Brooklyn". But that's what Meneguar is, and they completely nail it. Whiny, intricate, and catchy as hell. Maybe I should have just used those words instead. Right now, all I can think about is how one of the dudes doing melodic vocals sounds like Nikola from Millencolin, which is very funny to me. I should find all my old Millencolin records and upload them. Good idea.

buy
d/l

I HATE MYSELF - 3 SONGS 12" EP

I Hate Myself reunited in 2004 to release an epic swan song in the form of this concept EP about one man's relationship with lightning. I'm sure the royalties were even worse from Interscope than they are whenever this is rereleased on a new indie, but it just rocks that there was a band as good as this on a major label as recently as... 1995.

d/l
buy

Big Black - The Rich Man's Eight Track Tape

Think about this: I am giving you the opportunity to download digital files of songs that make up a compilation meant to illustrate the worthlessness of the CD. Like the smallest mention of Godspeed will get you laid twice, maybe three times in one night. Silver Mt. Zion or (gasp!) ExPlOSiOnZ iN THe SkY will have you looking at a MFFFFFFFFFF or something. Not the same attention is paid to Talk Talk, a band only somewhat well-known for their contributions to synthpop. Then WHABAM, they whipped out Spirit of Eden like my dick after namechecking F#A#∞: unexpected, but not unwelcome (except at first). This was post-rock before post-rock existed, and that album, much like Laughing Stock, has garnered much acclaim in its wake. Laughing Stock is where it all comes together, though, like I defy you to listen to it twice and tell you this isn't fucking genius. None of that ten-minute-buildup and emotional loud part here bullshit (which, admittedly, is a turn-on), just some of the most complex music ever laid to wax.

Apologies for making this sound like a joke or something. Other bands (like The Horrors) have actually made money and gotten famous doing a subpar job of aping this. Fuck.

d/l
buy

Black Eyes - Cough

I may not be doing Black Eyes any favors by uploading their second album, Cough, instead of their self-titled. That album is much, much more accessible, and is arguably the better of the two. I honestly prefer it to Cough, and I may post it on here at a later date, but I think of this as the most experimental Dischord release out there, and hearing this, it definitely sounds like Black Eyes had a few more great albums in them.

d/l
buy

Jeromes Dream - Completed 1997-2001

I always love it when a great band puts all their material on one release. Usually it's a single disc, but the fact that a band as prolific as JD were willing to leave nothing off in my mind set this release apart. Apart from that, I found it great that these guys were able to do the whole screamo thing as effortlessly as they did. Great musicianship here, to be sure. The screaming on 3/4 of this is pretty bad, so I honestly prefer the departure in vocal style on the first half of Disc 1, which is their last full-length, Presents. Honestly one of the only things I own that makes me want to start a band every time I hear it.

d/l Disc 1
d/l Disc 2
buy

CAPSULE - S/T; CAREER SUICIDE - CHERRY BEACH EP; END OF A YEAR - SINCERELY

CAPSULE - S/T

Just found this on the internet the other day, and I only vaguely knew what to expect. I've heard really good things about this band, and I knew that one of these guys was in Tunes for Bears to Dance To, who are one of my favorite bands, period. I am one of those people. I had heard that their drummer, Jonah, was in another punk band that was pretty good, Career Suicide, so I checked 'em out. I listened to this. I doubt they care, since they aren't making shit off this band thing either way, but by snagging the digital files of this, you're missing out on some of the best liner notes I've ever read. Patrick's lyrics absolutely rule, something the casual listener will definitely miss. The references at the end of each song are excellent, and have actually turned me on to a few good bands and people since I picked this up. The music itself definitely isn't for everyone, but I have to think there's a reason I've listened to this record a gazillion times.

d/l
buy

BLACK SHIPS - OMENS; FIGHT AMPUTATION/EXOSUS SPLIT; COALESCE- GIVE THEM ROPE

So it's almost the end of finals week here at Bard College. I pulled an all-nighter last night to write a paper, and I have a few hours of studying for philosophy to look forward to later tonight. Anyway, I thought I'd share what I've been listening to this last week, except for Fucked Up, who are getting enough coverage that you can find just about everything elsewhere. Band pounds, though, no doubt.

BLACK SHIPS - OMENS

This band blew my mind the first time I went to their Myspace and listened to their tunes, around the time their first EP, Low, came out. The thing showed huge promise, so I kept tabs on them and waited for Omens. Daniel and I downloaded the thing around the same time, and I think we can both agree that this beast delivers the goods. Eight tracks of the loudest, heaviest, and most pissed-off hardcore I've ever heard. They don't speed it up or slow it down a whole lot because they don't fucking have to. "The End" is one of my favorite songs of 2008, and no track on Omens is a slouch. This record as a whole may be my favorite release of '08, and if not, it's a close second to Chemistry of Common Life. Throw this on, turn the volume up as high as it'll go (then see if you can find more speakers), grab a beer, and hate the world. This thing is important, seriously picking up Skitsystem's torch and running with it.

d/l
buy it, for fuck's sake

FIGHT AMPUTATION/EXOSUS - SPLIT

I may or may not look like a giant prick for using a Mediafire URL on a measly split, but suffice to say that this captures two of my favorite heavy bands at the top of their games. Fight Amp deliver a slower, heavier follow-up to Ugly Kids Doing Ugly Things without quite displaying the AmRep worship they do nowadays. Nobody ever seems as stoked on Exosus (r.i.p.) as I am, but their two tracks here, their last recordings as a band, absolutely slay. The grind influences of their last 7", Feed the Furnace, are gone entirely here, replaced by a downtuned take on the Swedish sound. This suits them fine, making this a great testament to a great band.

d/l
buy

COALESCE - GIVE THEM ROPE

HAY GUYZ
I HEARD TEH GUY FROM REGGIE AND DA FULL EFFECT AND NEW FOUND GLORY OR SOME SHIT WAS IN THIS BAND ONCE SO I DOWNLOADED THIS AND IT WASNT CATCHY AT ALL AND JUST HAD A GUY YELLING AND STUFF. Looking back, they're a pretty average noise-rock band that occasionally does something amazing. I have no idea why Polyvinyl signed these guys, but I had a pretty interesting conversation with their guitarist at one point about the whole thing. This was produced by Ian MacKaye and is a really small file, so have at it.

d/l
buy

AT THE DRIVE-IN - EL GRAN ORGO; UNDEROATH - CRIES OF THE PAST; DAZZLING KILLMEN - DIG OUT THE SWITCH

AT THE DRIVE-IN - EL GRAN ORGO

A lot of people either don't know about or choose to ignore this EP when looking back on ATDI's career for a few reasons: the band hadn't entirely found their voice yet, for one (this being more melodic than anything they did before or after), and this is their only release sans Jim Ward, the driving force behind the band that wasn't Cedric Bixler-Zavala. Anyway, more than a few glimpses at how amazing this band was going to become are offered here, so check it out!

d/l
buy

UNDEROATH - CRIES OF THE PAST

Underoath?! UNDEROATH?! Yup. Years before they were tearing up the charts and pressing Hot Topic exclusives, they were playing some pretty legit metal. But were they the same band? Yes and no; two (of six) members from this release remain in the band, neither of which are Dallas Taylor. So yeah, if you want to try liking this band or just want to have license to be a dick to people who love (new) Underoath, here ya go.

d/l
buy other things...

DAZZLING KILLMEN - DIG OUT THE SWITCH

Some good ol' mathy noise rock from a good ol' mathy noise rock band. Pretty abrasive stuff on the whole, held together by some very competent musicians and some pretty great songwriting. I might rip off more Skin Graft releases in the future depending on how I feel, but this one may or may not be in print.

d/l
buy Skin Graft's shit

AN ALBATROSS - 1) SEX 2)BIRD 3)CAKE

This 1999 cassette-only demo from one of my favorite bands is a very interesting listen, to say the least. This features early versions of a few songs that made it onto their first LP, Eat Lightning, Shit Thunder, along with songs that are much heavier and more grindcore-based. Four great tracks of raging downtuned hardcore with a heavy dose of His Hero is Gone. "American Youth" is the absolute classic here, but this whole release is well worth the download.

d/l
buy "Hungry for Nothing"

EYES UPON SEPARATION - I HOPE SHE'S HAVING NIGHTMARES; DIVIDER - AT TWILIGHT; OKTOBER SKYLINE - THAT'S HOW TRIPODS WORK

EYES UPON SEPARATION - I HOPE SHE'S HAVING NIGHTMARES

Believe it or not, JT Woodruff (Hawthorne Heights) used to play in this band. (So did some dudes from Zao, I hear.) Ten tracks of emotive technical metal, if you can fathom that. I got the chance to see them live and they absolutely floored me. This release did the same, which is even more impressive considering this was their first. Six great tracks that fall somewhere between Ed Gein and Converge without ripping off either.

d/l
buy

OKTOBER SKYLINE - THAT'S HOW TRIPODS WORK

The only full-length from these five Pennsylvanians occasionally reminds me of Neutral Milk Hotel's best moments, with a pervasive Pavement sound throughout the whole disc that makes me want to get out my copy of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Nah, just kidding: eleven sick tracks of experimental grind done in a way that's both self-indulgent and tasteful (imagine that!). The fact that I still dig this album hard four years after its release is a testament to its quality, that's for sure.

d/l
buy
Oktober Skyline covers Danzig's "Mother"!

FIFTEEN - BUZZ; FROM ASHES RISE - "DISCOGRAPHY"; EMILYANNE - DEMOS

FIFTEEN - BUZZ

As I was posting this, Jack asked, "You don't like Mineral, but you like Fifteen?" The answer was "yes" -- I can't stand Mineral. I realize it's an apples-and-oranges comparison, but my hatred of Mineral had come up earlier. Moving on, Fifteen was a seminal Bay Area punk band formed after the breakup of Crimpshrine and fronted by Jeff Ott, one of the weirdest people in punk rock. I attended one of his performaces at a record store in 2005. He wheeled in a TV/VCR, dropped a basket of condoms (encouraging the showgoers to take as many as they wanted), turned on the TV, and started up a VHS of himself talking about some sort of rape/murder conspiracy. As the tape played, he sat next to me, rocking back and forth -- he reeked of body odor and weed, so it wasn't the most pleasant experience. That was the whole show; he didn't play any music, as the flyer had suggested he would. But it's exactly this sort of eccentricity that helped make Fifteen one of the best bands of the 90s, and it's exactly why they're better than Mineral.

dl
buy

FROM ASHES RISE - "DISCOGRAPHY"

Fast, brutal, crusty hardcore from Portland. Featuring current members of Tragedy and the infinitely boring Smoke or Fire. Quotes around "discography" because it doesn't include the Jade Tree-released Nightmares, but it's better stuff anyway.

dl

EMILYANNE - DEMO

One of my favorite bands from my hometown of Phoenix. They played passionate, Dischord-style emo with some serious musical sensibility (especially considering they were still in high school at the time). As far as I know, this was recorded sometime in mid- to late 2006. I'm pretty sure these four songs are the only ones from the session, but I could be wrong. All three members currently play in No Movement (formerly I Wish I) with a new vocalist.

dl

ON THE VERGE OF... - DISCOGRAPHY; LESS TALK - DEMO '06; DEADDEADDEATH - THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE TRIO OF DIO

ON THE VERGE OF... - DISCOGRAPHY

Sick of stale hardcore?
